Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach at Sunrise | Iceland

Reynisfjara black sand beach is the most famous beach on the South Coast of Iceland.

This particular morning we had an incredibly dramatic sunrise.

Its beautiful black sand, powerful waves, and the nearby Reynisdrangar sea stacks make Reynisfjara a truly unique place to visit and a popular filming location (Game of Thrones, Star Wars and more).

Reynisfjara Beach is one of the most well-known black sanded beaches in the world. This is a place of wild and dramatic beauty where the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean power ashore with tremendous force. In 1991, Reynisfjara appeared on the top ten list of the most beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world, and it is very easy to see why it was chosen!

“Just like everything else in Iceland, the Black Sand Beaches of Vík are quite magical. It’s a place that looks like it belongs on a planet that isn’t ours. Together with the basalt columns and the famous cliffs Reynisdrangar, Vík really is a place you have to visit if you’re in this beautiful country.”

Upon visiting the beach, travelers will immediately observe rocky sea stacks sitting off the shoreline, known as Reynisdrangar.

According to local Icelandic folklore, these large basalt columns were once trolls trying to pull ships from the ocean to shore. However, these trolls were dim and went out too late in the night; dawn broke on the horizon, turning the trolls into solid stone.
